Isabela Tavares is fascinated about costumes' unique ability to document history, and convey social, political, and cultural changes, as well as human behavior. Growing up in Brazil, she had a very diverse and liberal education, developing a great interest for the arts from all over the world, which not only influenced her curiosity for different people, cultures, and languages, but also her decision to pursue costumes as a career. As a professional costume designer and illustrator, she strives to combine her natural creative skills with a passion for telling stories through colors, textures, shapes, and fabrics.
Isabela is an Assistant Professor of Costume Design at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. She has previously taught at Virginia Commonwealth University in the US, where she earned an MFA in Costume Design. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Fashion and Textiles from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.
